After much searching for what the best option would be to use Android Auto in the Speedster, I eventually settled on a standalone display. There are car radios available with built-in Android Auto, but besides not being cheap, they are also limited in screen size. Additionally, I am actually still very happy with the sound of my Alpine radio.

After some searching, I found this unit on Amazon; it is low and wide, so I can place it higher without restricting the view through the windshield.

After thinking on how to mount this, I decided to place the display where the oil gauges are located in the dashboard. These haven’t been functional for years (they actually needed to be replaced), and it is a nice central spot for the display.

I drew a simple design that fits the positions of the two gauges, with mounting points for the display.

Printed on the 3D printer in PETG, to see if that is sufficient given the temperatures in the car.

For the car radio, I already had an aux-in adapter. These are still available for very little money. The display only needs power (5V), which can be drawn from the central 5V power supply I have in the dashboard. First, I connected everything to see if it would actually work.

And behold, it seems to work!

I loosely placed the dashboard back in position to see if the display, mounted via the adapter.

And that also seems to fit nicely.

Next I wired everything permanently and, after a lot of tinkering, got everything back in its spot.

I am satisfied with the result. The screen is clearly visible from the driver’s seat and well within reach.

The quality of the screen itself also seems to be fine. Wireless connection to my phone also works without any problems.

Shortly after the installation, I took a longer trip (+/- 450km). I had no problems during the journey. Navigation worked great, and the audio via the Alpine also ran without issues. Sound quality seems to be fine. As far as I can tell, there is no noise despite the two devices having separate power supplies. In short, satisfied with this solution 😊.

Perhaps in the future, if I perform another action on the dashboard, I will adjust the mounting again, but there is certainly no rush for that.
