After having read Engine management advanced tuning I ordered the second title by Greg Banish:

This book goes more in depth on the calibration of engine management systems. A big emphasis is on the correct modeling of injectors in the ECU. Not a problem when the engine is still running with the stock injectors, but when you need to replace them they need to be modelled correctly for the ECU to have a solid base on which to base fuel delivery.

The book discusses the various types of ECU’s, touches base on the basics of combustion and continues with more in depth analysis of the calibration of the ECU. Starting with volumetric efficiency tables, injector fuel delivery going through ignition timing.

From chapter 8 on the book focuses on workflow, how to calibrate an ECU and what tools you need. There are some very useful examples and best practices described here which really can help even when having to start mapping from blank.

The same goes for this book as for the other one, the relation with the Speedster/VX220 ECU isn’t 100% there, because it seems to differ quite a bit from the standard GM ECU’s. However, there is some very useful information here which can really help getting to grasps with how the ECU is actually controlling the engine.

Recommended reading for all who like to know more about the workings of an ECU.
